11th PUMP & VALVE CONGRESS HELD WITH STRONG PARTICIPATION

The 11th Pump & Valve Congress was held on 14–15 December 2023 at the METU Culture and Convention Center in Ankara. Organized under the theme “Water and Human 5.0”, the Congress was jointly organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Middle East Technical University (METU), Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (ITU), and POMSAD (Turkish Pump and Valve Manufacturers’ Association).

The Congress was supported by numerous national and international sectoral associations and federations. Türkiye’nin Makinecileri, AUMA, Duyar Vana, and Mas-Daf participated as Main Sponsors, while Alarko, Asteknik Vana, Doğuş Vana, Eagle Burgmann, KSB, Layne Bowler, Göksan Pompa, Samsun Makine Sanayi, and Standart Pompa supported the event as Gold Sponsors. Several sectoral magazines and media organizations also took part as Media Sponsors.

The Congress officially opened on 14 December with opening speeches delivered by Prof. Dr. Erkan Ayder (ITU), Ms. Nurdan Yücel, President of POMSAD and CEIR, Mr. Kutlu Karavelioğlu, Vice President of TİM, and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, Deputy Minister of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Industry and Technology.

Following the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Şevket Üçer (METU) delivered a keynote speech titled “Technology Development and Management”, while Prof. Dr. Mehmet Efe Biresselioğlu (Izmir University of Economics) addressed participants with his presentation titled “The Increasing Impact of Energy Security and Climate Change Concepts in Energy Policy-Making Processes.”

After the lunch break, the Conference Session began with Mr. Ömür Demir Kızılarslan, Sustainability Project Consultant of MAİB, who presented “Quo Vadis – Sustainability.” This was followed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdülkadir Bektaş, Deputy President of the Climate Change Presidency, who delivered a presentation on “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Situation in Türkiye.” The third presentation of the session was delivered by Prof. Dr. Haluk Karadoğan (ITU) titled “Istanbul: A City That Never Gets Enough Water.” Subsequently, Prof. Dr. Y. Onur Devres presented “Hygienic Food Pumps and Valves,” and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tarkan Gürbüz (METU) delivered his presentation titled “A Human-Centered Approach to Sustainable Development Goals: Transformation in Education.”

Following a short break, the “In Memoriam Session for Our Lost Values”, chaired by Prof. Dr. Erkan Ayder, was held. After a short film commemorating distinguished industrialists and academicians who had served the sector for many years, Mr. Vahdettin Yırtmaç, General Manager of Mas-Daf Türkiye, Prof. Dr. Haluk Karadoğan (ITU), and Prof. Dr. Kahraman Albayrak (METU) shared their memories of these esteemed individuals with the participants.

The first day concluded with a panel session titled “Water and Human 5.0”, moderated by Prof. Dr. Erkan Ayder. Panelists included Mr. Sinan Özgür, General Manager of KSB Türkiye, Mr. Zühtü Bakır, Secretary General of MAKFED, and Mr. Nazmi Kağnıcıoğlu, Head of Survey, Planning and Allocation Department at the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ). The theme was discussed from multiple perspectives.

On 15 December, the Congress continued simultaneously in three halls with invited speakers, paper presentations, and technical training sessions. A total of 21 paper presentations were delivered on the second day. Invited speakers included Mr. Tunç İşcan, Member Relations Representative of the Electrical Motor Manufacturers’ Association (EMOSAD), who spoke on “Transformation of Field Systems from an Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Perspective,” Dr. Adem Kayar, Head of the Digital Transformation Sector Board of ENOSAD, who presented “Digital Transformation in Industry and Smart Pump Applications,” and Mr. Korcan Kayrın, Nuclear Industry Supply Consultant, who delivered a presentation titled “Nuclear Power Plants and Pumps & Valves.”

On the same day, technical training sessions were provided to students and participants from various companies. Two training sessions were delivered by Mr. Cem Aydoğan and Mr. İbrahimşah Zengin from Navist, and one session was delivered by Mr. Altan Ongun from DESICA Engineering. Navist’s trainings covered topics such as Pipe Systems and Network Analysis with Flowmaster, Pump Sizing, and Pump and Valve Design and Optimization using CAESES and STAR-CCM+. DESICA Engineering’s training focused on Conceptual Design of Centrifugal and Mixed-Flow Pumps using the CFturbo Turbomachinery Design Platform, Parametric Decomposition of Existing Designs via Reverse Engineering Interface, and Fast Integrated CFD Solutions with CfTurbo Blade Runner.

The closing speech of the Congress was delivered by Prof. Dr. Seyhan Uygur Onbaşıoğlu (ITU). Following her presentation titled “Hydrogen and Society from an Engineering Perspective,” the Congress concluded with the presentation of awards to sponsors and session chairs, as well as a prize draw among participants and paper presenters.

Throughout the Congress, visitors also had the opportunity to visit the photo exhibition titled “Pumps and Valves in the 100th Anniversary of the Republic” held in the exhibition hall. The exhibition showcased historical and contemporary photographs illustrating the development of member companies from past to present.

The two-day Congress was visited by over 600 participants and was successfully completed with the participation of officials from water authorities of various provinces, ministries, the State Hydraulic Works, numerous public institutions and organizations, representatives from different industries, academics, and students.
